HOW TO HELP OUR LEARNERS’ HANDWRITING BECOME MORE LEGIBLE?
HOW TO HELP OUR LEARNERS’ HANDWRITING BECOME MORE LEGIBLE?
Here is what we found out while investigating the TOPIC online.
One of the most common steps teachers implement in their writing lessons is the use of graph papers or grid papers for those learners that have difficulty with letter sizing. It must be highlighted that students write from the top lines to the bottom lines, from the middle lines to the bottom lines and go under the bottom lines when writing certain letters. When teaching the letters with curved lines, it is vital that the educator explains the directions on where to start, where to turn, and where to stop or connect the curves. The middle line, in most graph papers, is printed in a different, even vivid, colour than the top and bottom lines.
Sometimes, teachers use a technique popular in the language area of the Montessori classroom - sandpaper to help the child feel or even scratch the letters with their fingers first.
To help our learners remember to leave space between words you may advise them to use small stickers or stamps. One may also ask students to place their pointer finger of their non-writing hand after the last letter of the word and write after the space of the pointer finger.
Another piece of advice resulting in more easily readable handwriting is to use pencil grips or/and mechanical pencils with different-sized leads. For those learners who are new to holding any pencil to write, it's best to use a marker pen and slowly move towards big triangular pencils. When starting to use smaller pencils, in order to help especially young learners maintain the right way to hold their pencils, so-called pencil grips will be of great help.
Also, the teachers may want to prepare printed copies of class notes. A child with dysgraphia will be grateful and the stress connected with re-writing from the board will be profoundly reduced.
